WhatsApp Business or Instagram shop for a first hustle?

I work with young women in Mombasa who are just starting small businesses - selling mitumba, doing braids, making cakes from home. Most have a smartphone and data bundles but no website, no coding skills. Two tools come up all the time: WhatsApp Business and an Instagram shop. WhatsApp Business feels familiar because everyone already uses WhatsApp for family and chamas. You can set up a catalog, quick replies, and customers pay via M-Pesa right in the chat. Instagram looks prettier for photos and reels can bring new customers who don't know you yet, but you need to understand hashtags, insights, and the algorithm. For someone with zero budget and zero tech confidence, which one would you tell them to start with? I usually say pick the one where your first ten customers already are, but curious what others think.

Honestly, I think you've nailed it with that "first ten customers" rule. For someone just starting, WhatsApp Business wins every time because it's what their market already opens every morning. Instagram looks tempting but takes time to learn and you might run out of data bundles chasing hashtags. Start with WhatsApp, get those first sales flowing into M-Pesa, then think about Instagram once you're making enough to reinvest.

Good take from everyone above. I'd add that with WhatsApp Business, their first customers can also become their marketers. A simple "share this status to your group" goes a long way here in Mombasa, word travels fast. Once they've got regulars, Instagram can come later, but no rush.

Big +1 on starting with WhatsApp Business. I've seen too many people burn through data bundles trying to figure out Instagram algorithms while their phone stays dry. The catalog feature on WhatsApp is surprisingly good for mitumba and braids, you can just snap photos with your phone and upload. One thing I'd add - show them how to pin their M-Pesa till number in the WhatsApp bio so customers don't even have to ask for it. That alone removes a friction point.

Sarah, you've already got the right instinct with that "first ten customers" rule, and I'd lean into it even harder. For zero budget and zero tech confidence, WhatsApp Business is the safer bet because it turns chats into sales with almost no learning curve, and M-Pesa makes closing seamless. Once they've got a steady flow and a few regulars, that's when Instagram becomes worth the data and hashtag grind, not before.

Yeah, WhatsApp Business is the way to go for now. One small trick I'd add: tell them to post their new stock on WhatsApp status too, their regulars already watch those and it feels less formal than Instagram. Once sales pick up, they can graduate to Instagram and reuse the same photos.

Ah, this is such a good conversation. I totally agree with everyone above - WhatsApp Business is the safest start. One more thing I'd add: tell them to use the "labels" feature inside WhatsApp Business to organize their customers, like "regular," "asked for price," or "M-Pesa confirmed." It's free and helps them remember who's who when orders start coming in. That little organization can save them from embarrassing mix-ups later. Asante for thinking of these women, Sarah - small steps really add up.
