How do you handle M-Pesa charges eating into small order profits?

I run a boutique in Eldoret and sell online too. Most orders are between 200 and 500 shillings, and the M-Pesa withdrawal fees really add up by the end of the month. I've thought about adding a handling fee but I'm worried customers will just go elsewhere. For those of you dealing with small payments, do you absorb the cost or pass it on? Or is there a trick I'm missing to keep cash flow healthy without upsetting buyers?

I've seen this bite a lot of small shops. One practical move: if you collect via M-Pesa, use the Business Till or Paybill API so funds land straight in your account and withdrawal fees drop to zero. The trade-off is roughly 0.5% per transaction, but on 200-500 KES orders that's usually less than the flat withdrawal fee. Another trick is to batch withdrawals weekly instead of daily, one fee on a bigger total. If you have repeat buyers, a punch card or bundle offer ('buy 5, get free delivery') nudges them toward larger single invoices, which dilutes the fee.

Kevin's point about the Business Paybill API is gold. That 0.5% is so much easier to swallow than the flat withdrawal fee when you're moving 200 shillings at a time. One more thing: don't frame it as a handling fee, package it as free delivery or a tiny processing line and test it for a month. In my experience buyers tolerate a 20 bob charge if it's transparent and upfront, but they bounce if it feels like a surprise at checkout. Also look at your WhatsApp orders, can you nudge people to bundle two smaller items into one order of 500 or more? That instantly makes the fee maths work in your favour.

I feel this one deeply! For my small side hustle I just batch withdrawals to once a week and it already helps. Also, have you tried asking regulars if they can do two small orders together instead of separate ones? Most of mine are happy to bundle once I explain it keeps my prices low.

This is such a relatable struggle for small shops in Eldoret! Kevin and the team have covered the big wins already. One thing I've seen work with my clients: add a tiny "payment processing" line of 10 or 15 bob on orders under 500, but show it clearly in the invoice before they pay. Most customers don't bat an eye because they know M-Pesa fees too, and it keeps your margins intact without surprising anyone.

Nice, digging into the withdrawal fees is the right instinct. If you haven't set up a Business Paybill or Till API yet, there's a short starter guide I can point you to. It's usually the single biggest fix for small-order fees.

I’ve found using the Business Paybill API means the fee is only about 0.5% per transaction, which is cheaper than the flat withdrawal, and batching your M-Pesa cashouts once a week also saves a lot; you could also ask repeat buyers to bundle two small orders so you reach 500 shillings and the fee becomes much smaller.
