What is a domain name in plain words?

Hey everyone, I keep hearing people say domain name but I’m not sure what it really means. In simple terms it’s the web address you type, like m-pesa.co.ke. Think of it as the name on your shop sign, only online. If you want a place for your business online, you can register a domain for a small fee, often just a few hundred shillings a year. It’s a good first step before you build a simple site or start selling on social media.

Nice explanation! Once you have a domain, you can point it to a simple landing page or even a WhatsApp link for now. I registered mine through Truehost and it was pretty straightforward.

Hey there, you've got the right idea about a domain name being your online shop sign. A useful next step is to check if your business name is still available through a local registrar like Kenya Web Experts or Truehost, many even offer free privacy protection with registration.

That's a great breakdown. One thing that confused me at first: the domain is just the address (like your shop's physical location), but the hosting is the actual shop building where everything lives. You need both to have a working website. Have you already thought about what you'd want on your site once you get the domain?

Nice one, that's a solid way to put it. Once you grab your domain, you can also set up a simple email like info@yourbusiness.co.ke - makes you look more serious than using Gmail. A lot of local registrars include a few free email addresses with the domain too.

Good point, everyone. Once you have that domain, don't stress about building a full website yet. You can park it with a simple "coming soon" page for free using something like Netlify or even a basic HTML page hosted on GitHub. Costs you nothing extra, and it saves your spot online while you figure out the rest.

Nice one! You can also just use that domain as a simple link in your social media bios for now, like pointing it straight to your WhatsApp number or a Google form for orders. Saves people from typing long links.
