FreeCodeCamp or YouTube for first coding steps?

I have been helping a few friends who just finished campus and want to try out tech, but they do not know where to begin. One friend asked me whether she should follow FreeCodeCamp or just watch coding videos on YouTube. Both are free, both can run on a basic phone with small data bundles, but one gives you a clear path while the other lets you jump around. From my experience, FreeCodeCamp (it is a free website that teaches coding step by step with small exercises) works well when you want structure. YouTube (it is just videos, so you choose what to watch next) is good if you like watching first and deciding later. I usually tell beginners to start with FreeCodeCamp for the first month, then use YouTube when stuck on something specific. If you are just starting and your data bundle is small, which one would you pick? Have you tried both? I would love to hear what worked for you.

Hey, that's a solid way to break it down. For me, I'd say start with FreeCodeCamp, especially if data is tight, because the exercises work even on low-bandwidth and you don't have to keep buffering videos. YouTube is great once you hit a wall and need to see someone explain that one confusing thing, but jumping around too early can make you feel lost. What kind of projects do your friends want to build first? That might help narrow it down even more.

Hey, great breakdown of the trade-offs! One useful angle to add: FreeCodeCamp's built-in browser editor means your friends can practice right on their phones without downloading anything, while YouTube often leads to "tutorial hell" where it feels like they're learning a lot but not actually building. Since data is tight, I'd suggest starting with just the first few Responsive Web Design certification lessons on FreeCodeCamp, then switching to YouTube only when a specific concept trips them up. What's the main goal for your friends - landing a job, building an app idea, or just exploring? That might shape which path serves them best long-term.

I'd go with FreeCodeCamp too, especially on small bundles. I've watched friends burn through data on YouTube and end up with zero code written, just videos watched.

Solid advice from everyone. I'd add that FreeCodeCamp also has a forum and chat where you can ask when stuck, which helps a lot when you're learning alone on a phone. For your friends who just finished campus, do they have any career path in mind, like data or web stuff? That can really guide whether to focus on Python or HTML first.

FreeCodeCamp for sure, especially on small bundles. The exercises are text-based and they save your progress, so you can do a few minutes here and there without burning data. YouTube is a good backup when you're stuck on one thing and need to see it done, but it's easy to spend an hour watching and forget to actually type anything. Tell your friend to start with the first FreeCodeCamp module and just finish it, then she'll know if she likes the flow.

That's a really thoughtful breakdown. I'd lean FreeCodeCamp too, especially on a small bundle. One thing that helped me was that FreeCodeCamp's exercises force you to type code, not just watch it. On YouTube, it's easy to feel like you're learning when you're really just watching. For a beginner on a phone, the text-based practice is gold. What field is she most curious about? That might help decide if she should start with something like HTML for web or Python for data/logistics.
