You don't need a powerful laptop to start coding, your phone works fine

I remember when I first wanted to learn coding, I kept telling myself I needed to save up for a proper laptop. That stopped me for months. But one day I just opened my phone browser and started with free tutorials. Surprisingly, my small smartphone handled it well. You can write code on a phone using simple text editors or even Google Sheets if you are starting with data stuff. Data bundles? Use free Wi-Fi at a cafe or campus library. Many of us began this way. So if you have been putting off learning because you think you need expensive gear, stop waiting. Start with what you have. Who else here felt the same at the beginning? Let's share so beginners know it's okay to start small.

Totally felt this. I used to think coding was only for people with fancy laptops, but my old Tecno phone proved me wrong. I started with free YouTube tutorials on Safaricom data bundles. What did you first learn on your phone?

Asha from my class started the same way, she used her phone to learn HTML and CSS from free YouTube videos during lunch breaks. The trick is just starting, even if it's 20 minutes a day. What about you, what are you planning to try first?

I get that. The small keyboard is the biggest hurdle at first. What helped me was connecting a cheap Bluetooth keyboard I had lying around, or just using voice notes to dictate my code logic when I was stuck. It makes a big difference. So, what's one small project you're thinking of trying out on your phone?

That's such a good point about starting small. I did the same on a borrowed phone, typing HTML into a notes app before even knowing what a browser console was. For anyone still stuck on gear: what's one thing you think would be harder to do on a phone than a laptop? Maybe we can help each other figure out a workaround.

Honestly, even now I sometimes use Google Colab on my phone to run Python code while I'm on a matatu. It works fine as long as you have a stable connection or a bit of hotspot data. For anyone who's stuck on where to start, try watching a short YouTube tutorial on your phone and type along in a free notes app, the muscle memory builds faster than you think.

True that! I learned basic HTML on my phone while waiting for interview callbacks. Used a free code editor app and saved pages right in the browser. Now I do short Python exercises on my phone during lunch. Anyone else use their phone to practice for interviews or work on their CV?
