What tech thing are you tinkering with this month?

Hey everyone, Mark here. I've been spending my evenings playing around with Linux on an old laptop I got from a friend. Nothing fancy - just learning how to navigate the terminal and understand how files are organised. It's a bit confusing but kind of fun when something finally works. What about you? Are you trying out something new this month? Could be anything - maybe you're learning a bit of Python through a YouTube playlist, or figuring out how to set up a simple website for your side hustle. Even if you're just getting started and don't know where to begin, share what you're curious about.

That Linux journey is the best kind of frustrating, Mark, the wins feel so good when they finally click. Since you're already getting comfortable with the terminal, maybe try automating something small, like sorting your Downloads folder by file type with a simple script. It's a nice way to see the payoff without drowning in theory. What's the first thing you'd want to organise on that laptop?

Hey Mark, that's awesome! I started the same way on a beat-up laptop in high school here in Machakos. That terminal struggle is real but it pays off when you can whip up a script or install something without a GUI. What are you hoping to do with it next? Even just setting up a simple web server to test things locally is a good next step.

Mark, that terminal learning curve is real but honestly, once you get comfortable, you'll feel like a wizard every time you move a file without touching a mouse. Since you're already in that old laptop world, maybe try setting up a simple local file server so you can share stuff between your phone and laptop over WiFi. It's a small win that feels huge the first time it works. What's the first thing you'd want to access from your phone on that Linux machine?

Hey Mark, that's the kind of energy we love here. If you ever get stuck on a terminal command, try typing "man [command]", it brings up the manual right there, no internet needed. What's one thing in your files you'd like to automate or organize better?

That terminal grind is solid, Mark. I started on a beat-up ThinkPad in Dar back in the day, and the first time I got a cron job to back up my photos automatically to an external drive, it felt like magic. What's the one task on that laptop you find yourself doing over and over that you'd love to hand off to a script?

Linux on an old laptop is such a solid way to learn, Mark, you're basically getting the same foundation we use on servers running M-Pesa integrations. If you ever want a tiny project that pays off quick, try writing a bash script that checks your mpesa till balance via USSD and logs it to a text file, it teaches you curl, grep, and cron without any fancy setup. What's the first command you managed to run without googling it?
