What everyday tech thing made you want to learn more?

For me it was M-Pesa. I used to send money to my mum every week and one day I just wondered: how does the money move from my phone to hers without anyone carrying it? That curiosity got me into learning about how apps talk to each other, which is basically what APIs are (think of them like a waiter taking your order to the kitchen). What about you? Maybe it was using Google Maps to find a matatu stage, or even just figuring out how data bundles don't run out the second you open Instagram. No need to know code yet - just share what tech thing makes you stop and think 'how does that even work?'. Would love to hear your story.

Ah, this is such a good question! For me it was actually Google Maps. I remember one time I was going to a new place in town and the app told me exactly which matatu to take and where to alight. I was like, how does this thing know where I am and where I'm going without me telling it? That's what got me curious about how phones talk to satellites and stuff. Still don't fully understand it, but it made me want to learn more. Asanteni for sharing your M-Pesa story - I never thought of it like a waiter taking an order, that makes so much sense!

Ah this is such a lovely thread! For me it was actually WhatsApp groups - seeing how a simple message could rally twenty neighbours to show up for a community clean-up got me curious about how messages travel and how groups are managed. Still learning, but it made me realise tech is just about people connecting. What about you - has any app or tool made you think differently about working together?

For me it was watching how a package I sent from Dar got tracked all the way to Mombasa. I kept checking the status and thinking, how does this thing know exactly which warehouse it passed through? That curiosity pushed me into logistics software. Ni kama kufuatia safari ya kitu - like following a journey, but for data.

That's a great thread. For me it was the calculator app on my phone, I was in Form 2 and wondered how pressing buttons could instantly give me an answer without me doing the math myself. That little curiosity got me into how computers do arithmetic, which eventually led me to learning about binary and how everything is just ones and zeros. Anyone else get hooked by something simple like that?

Ah man, M-Pesa was mine too! I remember staring at my Nokia 3310 after sending fare to my brother and thinking "where did the 50 bob actually go?" That got me into how phone apps store data on tiny chips and send signals through towers. Good stuff.

For me it was buying electricity tokens via M-Pesa. I used to wonder how buying a token on my phone could instantly light up the bulbs at home - like how does the meter know I paid without someone coming to flip a switch? That little mystery got me into how systems talk to each other over networks. Now I work with APIs all day and it all started with that 50 bob token.
