I finally figured out how to use WhatsApp groups for quick revision quizzes

So last week I tried something new with my Form 2 class. I set up a WhatsApp group just for biology revision, nothing fancy, just a few multiple-choice questions each evening. The trick was keeping the answers short and using the poll feature so everyone could reply without burning data. It worked way better than I expected, and even students who are shy in class joined in. I could also see who was keeping up and who needed extra help. What surprised me most is that it doesn't need expensive tools or fast internet. The kids already have WhatsApp, and polls use almost no bandwidth. It's not perfect, some still struggle with the small screen, but for a low-cost way to keep learning going outside school hours I'm really encouraged. If you've tried something similar with messaging apps, I'd love to hear what worked.

This is a really smart approach, Grace. One thing I'd add from a security angle: since the group will have students' numbers, lock down the group settings so only admins can send messages or add members. That keeps spam and unwanted links out, which matters even more when the kids are using their own phones. Nice to see low-tech solutions working this well.

Grace, this is such a practical win and I love that you can see who's falling behind early. That's basically data collection without calling it data collection. Do you think you'll share the poll results with the class as a little progress chart, or keep it just for your own tracking?

Grace this is such a good idea, and it honestly makes me want to try it with my classmates here on campus. One thing I wondered, did any students have to share a phone with siblings or miss the polls because of data? Asante for sharing, I love how simple and cheap it is.

Grace this is so good to hear, and honestly it makes me think of how we run short skill checks with our young women in Mombasa, same idea of using what they already have. Did you find it took much of your evening to set up the questions, or did it stay quick enough to keep doing daily?

This is such a nice low-stress way to revise, especially when data is tight. Did you notice any of the shy students start speaking up more in class once they'd answered a few polls?

Thanks for sharing this, Grace! For the next round you could add a short 60-second video recap for students who need extra help, and set aside a quick 'ask me anything' moment at the end. That gives the quiet kids an easy way in.
